Exemption for doctoral degree holders
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Holders of M.Phil. degree will not be exempted from clearing the NET examinations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for being appointed as teachers in institutions under the University of Kerala.
This was decided at a meeting of the University's Academic Council held here on Wednesday. However, those with a doctoral degree in the subject concerned will be exempted from the NET for similar appointments.
The decisions came when the Council debated the directive from the UGC to exempt from the NET those with an M.Phil. degree for being appointed as teachers for graduate courses and those with a doctoral degree for getting appointed as teachers of postgraduate courses.
The new guidelines for ranking for postgraduate courses will be studied in detail and taken up for discussion at the new meeting of the Council. It was decided to forward to the respective Boards of Studies the proposal that allows candidates who fail in the MCA examinations to reappear for just the paper they failed in and one that calls for making environment studies a compulsory paper for degree courses.
The proposal to grant recognition to the MA (distance learning) degree of the Madras University will now be considered by the Board of Studies and by the University Syndicate.
The Council decided to grant recognition to the doctoral degree awarded by the Forest Research Institute at Dehra Dun. The M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry degree (regular) of the Alagappa University will be considered equivalent to the M.Sc. Chemistry degree of the University of Kerala. The BA Double Main (English and History) degree of the Calicut University will be recognised as qualification for admission to the B.Ed. (English) programme of the University of Kerala. While the Arabic-Islamic History double main degree of the Calicut University will be recognised as qualification for admission to the B. Ed. Social Science course, the BA Development Economics programme of the Kannur University will be considered equivalent to the BA Economics programme of the University of Kerala.
